Electric Callboy
Biography
Formed in 2010 under the name Eskimo Callboy, the band has already made plenty of noise in its first decade of existence, picking up newcomer awards, achieving top ten placements and causing a worldwide sensation, but judging by what's been going on in the last two years, that was just the prelude.
Since the singer Nico Sallach, who joined the band in 2020, the guys from Castrop-Rauxel have been really going for it! The very first single with him broke all previous dimensions: "Hypa Hypa" not only reached over 60 million plays on YouTube and the usual streaming portals in record time but was also reinterpreted in the most diverse ways in collaboration with renowned artists such as Sasha, The Bosshoss and Saltatio Mortis.
The next single "We Got The Moves", which is also featured on the new album "TEKKNO", proved to be another hit. Especially the screamingly funny video, in which the band takes the piss out of themselves with undercut wigs and nose glasses in their typical self-deprecating manner, has been the talk of the town ever since and has received a lot of attention worldwide.
The next hit, "Pump It," also featured on "TEKKNO," whose incredibly funny clip was inspired by the aerobics videos of the Eighties, also made waves. The community even demanded that the band participate in the Eurovision Song Contest for Germany with this song, whereupon the musicians spontaneously filmed an official application. However, participation in the national preliminary round for the ESC was rejected due to an alleged lack of radio suitability, triggering a storm of indignation against the jury that culminated in a petition with over 125,000 signatures. Once again, Eskimo Callboy were the talk of the town.
In the course of the increased sensitivity in the use of ethnic terms and controversial discussions about it, the band no longer felt comfortable with their then carelessly chosen first part of the name and therefore renamed themselves ELECTRIC CALLBOY on March 9th of this year in order not to hurt or exclude anyone. Shouter Kevin Ratajczak comments aptly, "Raider is now called Twix, nothing else changes."
Actually, the band wanted to shoot a big video about the renaming in their inimitable style, but the war in Ukraine has completely shifted the priorities. In the unusually serious statement by the two frontmen, the focus is therefore less on the new band name and more on drummer David Friedrich's fundraising campaign, which has now managed to collect almost €90,000 for Ukrainian refugees. A remarkable process of maturity that demands great respect!
But ELECTRIC CALLBOY wouldn't be ELECTRIC CALLBOY if they didn't do what they do best on their new album, namely burn off a wild good-mood fireworks display that is as dazzling and gaudy as the colors in the new band logo.
In addition to the two aforementioned hits "We Got The Moves" and "Pump It", this sixth album also features the brand new single "Spaceman", which includes a guest feature by FiNCH, whose casual rhymeflow in the verses provides a stark contrast to the gripping power bridge and cheerful pop chorus. The band already lived out their penchant for rap last year, among other things, with the Kalle-Koschinski co-op "Castop X Spandau", and "Spaceman" once again shows the amazing naturalness with which they can open up their style in this direction.
Adding yet another layer to the sound is the wonderfully light alternative number "Fuckboi," which features female post-hardcore band Conquer Divide. Very charming!
Back to the trancecore roots, on the other hand, go the desolate "Mindreader" and "Parasite", whereby here, too, the compositional maturity gained in recent years is striking with its cleverly staged loud/quiet dynamics. The impressive development can also be heard in "Arrow Of Love", which oscillates between sugary sweet synth pop and hard-hitting circle pit baller - this arrow hits right in the heart!
The "Tekkno Train" lives up to its name, with the retro dancehall sounds and the outrageously catchy chorus being intensified in their effect by heavy metalcore passages - sounds like the Bloodhound Gang on steroids!
Afterwards the laughing muscles are strained to the limit with "Hurricane", because this short fun number is both musically and lyrically a gifted Ballermann parody, which culminates in a nasty breakdown with Pig Squeals.
Finally, ELECTRIC CALLBOY take up the Nu Metal elements of their last album "Rehab" once again on "Neon" with fat sub-basses and a Linkin Park-like chorus, but put them into a tongue-in-cheek Euro-Pop context, which especially suits singer Nico so damn well.
"TEKKNO" is an album like a roller coaster ride: with dizzying highs, breath-taking gut-wrenching passages and wild plunges - great ride here, be there!
Since ELECTRIC CALLBOY have also made a name for themselves as a spectacular live band, the immense demand for concert tickets is not surprising. The "Hypa Hypa" European tour, which was postponed until this spring because of Corona, was sold out almost everywhere in advance, which is why tour promoter Contra Promotion recently presented the band with a sold-out award for 60,000 tickets sold. In addition, the "Escalation Fest" will take place for the first time on August 13 in the Ruhr region of Germany, where the name says it all - escalation is allowed! And then follows the big arena tour for "TEKKNO" with the new stroke of genius in the center...
